Personal Statement
I finished studying textile design at The University of Brighton in 2016 where I specialised in printed textiles. From then I have work within textile design, form childrens-ware to interior textile design. I became interested in block printing because of the possibilities of creating patterns without too much space and now have quite a collection of my own designs carved in wood. I really enjoy creating patterns that repeat in a way that tricks your eye and makes you search for the pattern. I like combining the digital and handprinted elements to create my designs, much like screen printing but what I love about wooden block printing is that you can be less accurate and do it more by eye, creating a less regimented overall pattern.
I design my prints by looking at many influences, from antique textiles and illustrations to paintings and patterns in nature. I start by using Japanese watercolours to paint my design focusing, I then digitalise and create a repeat tile artwork. Colour is hugely important to me, I mix my own colours and keep notes and recipes on how to mix them again.
