Personal Statement
I am a sculptor who uses sheet metal copper and steel to produce sculptures that straddle figuration and abstraction; some works might look abstract, others might have recognisable figurative elements or motifs, and some might fit onto or around the body using a more conceptual approach. Despite these approaches initially seeming different, they all relate to ‘the body’, are different ways to approach a single subject, and can co-exist.
Themes:
• Decorative plates – inspired by Aboriginal shields and their ancestral patterns.
• Textiles ‘Patterns’ - cut, folded, bent, tailored like a good suit of clothing. Collars and pinstripes alluding to social structures.
• Narratives – simple texts referring to personal stories and memories.
• The Body - conceptual links via ideas of function, metaphorical links via. space, size, shape.
I see making Art as a way of finding things out, observing and making unexpected connections, giving a voice to materials, having a conversation with my imagination and the world around me.
I studied Fine Art to MA level at Royal College of Art, and I am Programme Coordinator for Fine Art BA at the University of Chichester.
