About the artist

Hand thrown functional and decorative ceramics in porcelain,
glazed in a subtle palette of colours.

Personal Statement

Heather Muir’s porcelain work embodies a delicate balance between functionality and beauty. Each piece is hand-thrown using Audrey Blackman porcelain, shaped as thinly as the material allows. Once the clay reaches a leather-hard stage, Heather meticulously trims each vessel to refine its form.

Her vases, pod forms and bowls are defined by smooth, gentle surfaces and subtle textures. Heather finishes each piece with calm, muted glazes, all of which she formulates herself to achieve a carefully curated palette. These subtle tones, particularly her distinctive blues and greys, are inspired by the sea and the coastal landscape of Sussex. All her work is fired in an electric kiln.

Heather studied 3D Design: Ceramics at Bath Academy of Art, graduating in 1980. She then pursued a career in primary education before returning full-time to ceramics. Today, she runs her pottery practice from her garden studio in Chichester, West Sussex.
