Personal Statement
Clare Blatchford-Hanna (b. 1976, UK) is a multidisciplinary artist based in West Sussex. Working across drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, her practice explores perception and representation through observational processes and material experimentation. Her work engages multiple sensory and temporal layers, balancing recognisable reality with the complexity that often lies beneath it.
Blatchford-Hanna’s practice investigates dualities and transformation, revealing socio-economic narratives through the contrasting qualities of her chosen media. Using an intuitive, material-led approach, she develops visual languages of expressive mark-making, layered perspectives, and bold contrasts of form and colour.
Originally studying Economics, Blatchford-Hanna built a successful career in business before moving into the arts. She later gained a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design and a Graduate Diploma in Fine Art from West Dean College, West Sussex. She has exhibited in the UK and sold work to private collectors. Her practice continues to evolve through ongoing research, experimentation, and engagement with contemporary audiences and professional networks.
