Polly Meynell
About the artist
Polly Meynell uses machine embroidery and applique to create abstract and figurative textile artworks that invite the observer to question.
Personal Statement
Polly Meynell creates bespoke textile embroidered artworks for public and private spaces. She trained at Brunel University and has been developing her unique approach over a twenty-five-year period. The way in which light plays on colour has inspired and continued to inform her practice. More recently she has been exploring the female form and how experience can change how the body holds itself.
She is interested in the relationship between colour, light, and texture. How association can change colour, and how shadow and light interact with an embroidered surface of layered thread. Her intention is primarily to arrest, invite question and encourage viewers to come in for a closer look. Much of her work for public and ecclesiastical spaces have needed to communicate across large distances whilst still maintaining an integrity and narrative at close range.
She has completed many site-specific art installations on a large scale, expressing a deep sense of craftsmanship and precision through an abstract narrative. She has designed for hospitals, Cathedrals, Livery Companies, and her textile art works have been collected by artists and the public across the UK.
