Personal Statement

By the age of 16, I had already decided that a life making pots was my future. After 4 years at Art College, I set up my first pottery at Donnington with a friend/colleague., making functional pots and individual pieces in stoneware and porcelain. We later moved the entire pottery to Stansted, near Rowland’s Castle. Throughout this period, I taught at West Dean college, initially on the short course programme for many years, but also began to teach the specialists students on the Conservation of Arts course. This collaboration led to exploring ancient pot making techniques with the UCL Institute of Archaeology. The dynamic of running a pottery studio and teaching has provided a balance and practical approach to my life as a potter, which I have found fulfilling and rewarding in all facets of the relationship. I have just passed my 50th year of teaching at West Dean College.
