About the artist
Sculptures hand-carved in alabaster, soapstone, onyx, slate and marble. Paintings in ink.
Personal Statement
Jane hand-carves stone, mainly alabaster, soapstone, onyx and slate. She explores the stone’s texture, translucency, the roughness of natural stone and its appearance when smoothed. She investigates its ability to hold the tool marks and gestures that reveal the presence of the artist. Much of her time is spent learning how the material qualities of stone can be balanced with her own ideas and inspirations. She draws on the wild Atlantic coastline for its energy and movement, and figures from Greek myths and legends to inhabit that landscape.
Jane also explores textures in the landscape, using free-flowing acrylic inks.
Jane works in her studio in Chilgrove, near Chichester, and has completed an MFA in Sculpture at West Dean College. Jane was a featured sculptor at the biennial Doddington Hall Sculpture Exhibition, she exhibits her sculptures nationally, and has work in private collections worldwide. She enjoys making commissioned pieces.
