About the artist
Expressive and atmospheric watercolour: landscape, seascape, semi-figurative, abstract and life paintings.
Personal Statement
My aim is learn more about the visible and invisible energy which interconnects the universe and my own existence within it. As a self-taught
painter, working mostly on the spot, I hope to express this notion with transparent watercolour.
Water is a shape shifter. It can stick, run, spread, fall, freeze, drip, spray and evaporate... Its surface tension and speedy response to light, gravity and heat imbue it with a quirky sensitivity to weather, mood, movement and idea.
The jeopardy of painting alongside - never controlling - watercolour is a thrilling and unrepeatable coming-together of earth (pigment), water (as vehicle), drying speed (heat), air (wind) and, of course, in the alchemy of creation, the fifth crucial element - me.
The conjunction of order and chance underpinning both human and organic experience and reaction is my stimulus. This edgy dynamic is therefore the pivot for my choice of watercolour as THE medium of expression.
Honed skills and a love of jeopardy and exploration allow me to respond directly and physically in the moment to the rhythm and texture of life: an absorption where ego and separateness surrender to a sense of universal connection - an unconscious sigh, a breathing out.
