I always imagine an artist’s studio as a wondrous vessel, especially kitted out as a transport into unknown dimensions…whence miraculous things shall be retrieved! So, to be invited by the artist into such a special place, feels like a very rare privilege; an enriching insight that shines a light on their work, making it accessible and full of meaning.

Our first interviewee – Malcolm Macdonald

I recently went to see Malcolm Macdonald, in his now peaceful studio world, with my daughter Ellen. She has offered to interview some artists in their studios with me, to feature here on the website.

Having run the Art Trail for the past eight years, Malcolm had to be the first! After an hour or so, Ellen and I both came away enlivened through Malcolm’s love of his work. His generosity in sharing his practice, brought his pots to life and we loved and wanted them all!

This of course echoes the experience the Open Studios Art Trail can offer to all its thousands of visitors. As such, this series of studio visits is an inspiration to the art lovers who embark upon the Trail for those first two May weekends, and is an affirmation of the delight that we, as artists, impart to those who come to see us.

I would like to thank all the artists who have welcomed us into their sanctuaries and given us such interesting, varied and personal views of what it is to be creative.
