Personal Statement

My work is primarily Semi-abstract, Collage, Still Life and recently Abstract. Living by the Coast and Countryside allows me a wealth of subject matter. I do quick small studies when out and about, taking notes of weather, mood, light etc. and that is usually sufficient to start my paintings once in the studio. I work intuitively and although I tend to have an idea of my subject, my response to the work can change direction many times.

I use a multitude of tools and execute the work in mixed media. All have their place within mark making as each brings value to the work.

I always consider myself a student, therefore I continue to push myself into new ways of working. In 2023 I did a twelve week online course, the result of which is a new body of abstract paintings. It can be a leap of faith, without a starting point, as experimentation and exploration with mark making are key to abstract. It can be playful gestural brush marks, or one can apply paint in other ways as a means of connecting with the work.
